LAKETON TOWNSHIP, MICH. - Their families say two women injured after a tree limb fell Tuesday in Muskegon County will recover.
One of them, 69-year-old Sandra Butler, needed surgery to repair a head wound. She and Barb O'Dell, 57, were walking with a group along Whitehall Road in Laketon Township when the limb fell.
They were returning from a nearby Dollar General Store when a limb broke off a nearby oak tree, landing on some power lines, snapping the utility pole they were attached to. A street light on the falling pole struck the two women.
“It’s just really scary,” says Deanna Westbrook, whose mother suffered a head injury. “You don't think of something that crazy happening to your family until, boom, one day it does.”
Property owner Jason Kidner says, “Just the timing of it, a second here or a second there and it would have missed them.”
O'Dell was released from the hospital Wednesday afternoon, while Butler is still being treated.
The owner of the property with the damaged tree says there are a few other big old oaks along that section of Whitehall Road. He says he and his neighbors are talking about having them inspected and removed if necessary.
