MUSKEGON COUNTY, MICH. - Voters in Muskegon County chose Democrat Michael Poulin as their new sheriff.
Poulin, who recently retired from the Muskegon County Sheriff's Department as a captain, beat out Dennis Luce -- an Army veteran who currently is a sergeant with the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department.
Poulin earlier defeated incumbent Dean Roesler in the August primary. Roesler had been sheriff since 2008.
The five previous sheriffs in Muskegon County were appointed to the job. It's the first time in 55 years a new sheriff was selected by voters.
"The residents have an opportunity to pick the individual, they get to say who they want, not through an appointment, but through voting, and that is how the process should work," Poulin said.
