Police say attempted abduction reports are 'embellished'

FRUITPORT, MICH. - Police are investigating suspicious activity reports near The Lakes Mall, but say social media claims of an attempted abduction have been "embellished and are not accurate."

Officers say a man in a tan van went up to shoppers to ask them for money.

After learning about the social media posts that claimed an attempted abduction took place, police interviewed witnesses a second time. They determined the man had not tried to kidnap anyone.

Police will continue their investigation into the suspicious activity. They will also be patrolling the area near The Lakes Mall and other stores more often.
