Tanning employee charged with recording female customers

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM) - An employee at a Muskegon tanning business was arrested in charged for allegedly recording videos of female patrons against their wishes.

Police were called to the Planet Fitness in the 2500 block of Henry on Wednesday by a 21-year-old woman who found a concealed cell phone in her tanning booth recording her. The phone was traced to an employee, 25 year old Trent Jannenga, who initially claimed that someone had stolen his cell phone. During interviews with police, Jannenga admitted that his phone hadn't been stolen and that he had concealed the phone in the tanning booth to record the victim. The owner of the business was also unaware he was doing this.

Jannenga also admitted to police that he had recorded several other customers while they tanned, but after watching the videos, he had deleted them. Detectives executed search warrants on the home and cell phone and found no evidence that the recordings had been saved or shared.

WZZM 13 News talked to customers as they left the fitness club Friday night. Many told us they were surprised. Some admit to taking their clothes off for a full body tan. Jessica Towne comes often, "I tan 2 or 3 times a week." She says she never worried about someone watching her before, but now says she's worried. "There is a rack in the corner where they keep the cleaning supplies and things like that. I've never thought to look behind there or check behind the booths but now I'm a little paranoid."

Trent Jannenga is from Norton Shores. He's in jail on charges of Capturing/Distributing Images of an Unclothed Person and False Report of a Felony, both felonies.
