NWS: Four tornadoes in last week's storms

MUIR, Mich. (WZZM) -- After surveying damage from last week's storms, the National Weather Service says four tornadoes touched down in three West Michigan counties.

Tuesday, meteorologists confirmed an EF-0 tornado occurred around 12:34 a.m. on Monday, July 7 in Ionia County. The twister had a damage path that began near Pine Road just south of Kimball Road and continued northeast for .75 miles, crossing Stoney Creek Road and ending south of M-21.

The tornado ripped roofing material from two homes and damaged two farm buildings. The storm also carried a plastic playground slide 1,500 feet. There was significant tree damage in a 50 yard wide path, with lighter damage extending about 150 yards.

Maximum sustained winds are estimated at 80 mph and the tornado lasted four minutes.

Another EF-0 twister struck at 12:20 a.m. Monday near Reeder Road, north of I-96, about five miles southeast of the city of Ionia. The tornado, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph, was 50 yards wide and on the ground less than a mile.

The National Weather Service also confirmed there was an EF-0 tornado in Clinton County on Monday, July 7. It first struck at 12:51 a.m. on Tallman Road, south of Walker Road and destroyed a barn and an attached garage and damaged siding on a home. The damage path continues on Walker Road between Essex Center and Lowell Roads. That twister flattened a large oak tree and maple trees in two areas during its 10 minute duration. The damage path was 150 yards long and 80 yards wide.

Earlier, around 10:20 p.m. on Sunday, July 6, a larger EF-1 tornado touched down in Kent County, damaging 50 homes and businesses and injuring seven people.
