Occupied homes burglarized in Cannon Township

Home invasions in Cannon Township

CANNON TOWNSHIP, MICH. - In the middle of the night when the people inside are sleeping, a burglar has been breaking in, or trying to break in, to Cannon Township homes near Bostwick Lake.

Deputies say it has happened 19 times in one week -- 11 homes successfully broken into and eight attempts.

Investigators say the thieves are mostly interested in cash.

The crimes happen between midnight and 6 a.m. In each case there were people inside.

“It’s a common denominator among all of these,” says Sgt. Joel Roon of the Kent County Sheriff’s Department. “There was someone at home.”

Grant Gayan says he was asleep inside when his home on Deer Court Grove NE was broken into.

“I didn’t hear him because it was that night when there was a big thunderstorm,” he says. “It is a bit scary when you think about it because anything could have happened that night.”

Police say Corey James Vansuilichem, 32, of Belding is a person of interest in their investigation. He is charged with receiving and concealing a stolen vehicle after he was caught in a SUV taken during a Grandville home burglary.

Vansuilichem went to prison 15 years ago on home invasion charges and he is currently on probation for a drug violation.
