Grand Rapids teen hurt in distracted driving crash

TALLMADGE TOWNSHIP, MICH. - A Grand Rapids teenager is in stable condition at a local hospital after Ottawa County deputies say he was involved in a crash caused by distracted driving.

It happened Monday, March 20, between Marne and Allendale. Investigators say around 4:30 p.m. the 16-year-old boy was looking at his phone while driving east on Leonard Road near 42nd Avenue.

When he looked up, he saw a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing and slammed on the brake pedal to avoid a collision. That's when he lost control of the car and went off the right side of the road before rolling several times.

The boy was taken to Mercy Health Saint Mary's Hospital in Grand Rapids where he is listed in stable condition.
