Poor community grades for GRPD

LINC gives GRPD bad grade

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - A new report card gives Grand Rapids Police Department lots of room for improvement.

Dozens of people at a LINC Up community forum give the GRPD efforts to improve community relations C and D grades.

The department's 12 point improvement plan is getting more attention after officers looking for a pistol drew guns on five boys walking home from a basketball game and after a study showed black drivers are twice as likely to get pulled over as whites. Participants in the forum May 23 say, so far,  police improvements are insufficient.

“We asked the community to rate how the city is doing in terms of managing and improving community relations,” explains LINC Up executive director Jeremy DeRoo. “The community came out and basically said the city wasn't doing enough. That the efforts made so far are not sufficient. It shows the city has a lot of work to do.”

In a written statement GRPD Chief David Rahinsky said improving police and community relations is “an evolving, ongoing journey”. This month he says the police department is hosting 5 community meetings to get input about next steps.
