Prison escapee extradited to Michigan; not ruling out another escape

LAPORTE, Ind. (WZZM) -- A convicted killer who was captured in northern Indiana after escaping from the Ionia Correctional Facility is being extradited back to Michigan.

Michael David Elliot appeared before a LaPorte County Indiana judge Thursday afternoon where he withdrew his petition to fight extradition.

Following the brief court hearing, Elliot was escorted out of the Sally Porte by two state of Michigan vehicles. WZZM 13 followed them on Interstate 94 from Indiana into Michigan. The state of Indiana agreed to drop a felony theft charge against Elliot for stealing a vehicle while he was on the run, to allow the extradition to move forward.

WZZM 13 asked Elliot why he initially fought extradition. He said he wanted to draw attention to his case and maintained his innocence in a quadruple murder two decades ago. "I just want to say my conviction was based on lies from people who lied to save themselves from life in prison, and that Charles Treece's confession to my innocence, he's wanting to clear his own conscience and it explains all the evidence against me," Elliot told WZZM 13.

WZZM 13 also asked if he intended to escape prison again and Elliot said he's not ruling it out. "Not if I'm cleared, my innocence is cleared," Elliot told WZZM 13.

Prosecutors say Elliot had run out of legal options. "It was just a situation where once you take a good hard look at the paperwork, you realize there's not a lot of room for legal maneuvering and a quality attorney won't make up stuff where there is no basis, so once the paperwork was examined it is what it is," says Chris Fronk, Deputy Prosecutor for LaPorte County, Indiana.

Elliot was serving life in prison without parole for fatally shooting four people and burning down their Gladwin County house in 1993 when he was 20 years old.

Elliot escaped Feb. 2 from Ionia Correctional Facility in Michigan and was caught in northern Indiana the next day. He is charged with auto theft in Indiana. He's also charged with carjacking, kidnapping and escape in Michigan.
