Mother found dead at Rockford-area home; her son, a suspect, dies at hospital

Two people are confirmed dead and an investigation is now underway at a Rockford area home.

COURTLAND TOWNSHIP, MICH. - Police responding on a welfare check at a northeast Kent County home discovered a mother dead and son with a serious gunshot injury.

Kent County Sheriff's Department deputies responded around 2:25 p.m. Monday, March 20, to the home on 14 Mile Road NE near Ramsdell Drive NE, according to a county dispatcher.

It appears the woman and man both had gunshot wounds to their body, Kent County Undersheriff Michelle LaJoy-Young said. The man later died at a Grand Rapids-area hospital.

Police identified the woman as 59-year-old Gloria Launiere and son as 34-year-old David Applegate.

He is considered a suspect in the police investigation, La-Joy Young said. It's too early to determine what lead up to their deaths, she adds.

A call to dispatch came in as a welfare check on a particular person, but police then put up crime scene tape and asked people to stay away from the property.
