Grand Rapids (WZZM) -- More people are experiencing financial trouble because of the economy. And volunteer groups that help them are getting a unique perspective on living in need, thanks to a poverty simulator.
Participants were given a family name and a folder with all too familiar scenarios. The mock families received materials like travel passes, money, social security numbers and food.
As four simulation weeks ticked by, the hard part was staying above water. It was even harder to deal with the frustration.
Besty Thompson, the program's director says the simulator teaches an important lesson.
"Lend a helping hand to somebody, rather than judge them and pass them by" said Thompson.
