GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - The Kent County Health Department says that a second person has died from the H1N1 flu - and that this person had no underlying health conditions.
Grand Valley State University's Web site says that John David Prince, a student at Grand Valley, 33, of Grand Rapids, died Thursday evening. He had been hospitalized since October 25 at Spectrum/Blodgett. Prince did not live in university housing.
"We are saddened by Mr. Prince's passing and we want to express our sympathies to his family, friends and those who had classes with him," said Grand Valley President Thomas J. Haas.
Cynthia Luke was the first known person in Kent County to die from complications of the H1N1 flu virus. She also suffered from congestive heart failure and other underlying health conditions. A 54-year-old man from Ottawa County who also had other health issues has also died this season from the flu.
The number one way to avoid the flu is to get vaccinated. As more vaccine becomes available, vaccine will be provided through physicians, pharmacies, and KCHD clinics. Please visit www.stickittotheflu.com or call the Flu Hotline at (616) 742-4FLU (4358) for frequent updates about vaccine availability and, once more vaccine arrives, where you can get H1N1 vaccinations.
We'll have more information when it becomes available.
