GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - To elect a republican governor, attorney general and secretary of state in Michigan, national party chairman Michael Steele says candidates must find new ways to connect with voters.
Especially voters in Detroit.
"Get out of your comfort zone," says Steele. "Get out and engage the communities and get your behind over to Detroit."
Hundreds of republicans turned out to support the party and hear the National Committee Chairman speak
"I think he's trying to bring some new fervor into the party and I think that's what we need; new thoughts and ideas," said republican Jim Paternoster.
Steele is a republican who had a disagreement with radio host Rush Limbaugh earlier in the year. He says they are friendly now.
"We are perfectly fine," says Steele.
Instead of the past, Steele says he's focused on the future and electing leaders who will help citizens recover from the recession.
"It's always been about you," Steele told the crowd. "Now someone needs to tell Barack Obama it's not about him-- it's about you!"
At their dinner the Kent County Republicans held a straw poll. The winners of the informal election were: Rick Snyder for governor, Bill Schutte for attorney general and Paul Scott for secretary of state.
