Unanimous vote against firearms training academy in Muskegon county

Township Planning commission rejects gun range

BLUE LAKE TOWNSHIP, MICH. - The Blue Lake Township Planning Committee's unanimous vote against a fire-arm training academy seems telling that it will not be built.

The commission heard from more than 100 residents with safety and noise concerns about building the Ranger Firearm Instruction Training Academy would have given rise to. Many residents also believed the academy would cause property values in the township to significantly decrease.

Developer Joe Brugnoli asked the Blue Lake Township Zoning Board to utilize 64-acres to build eight gun ranges, a five-story tower, and a helicopter landing zone to train military, law enforcement, private security companies and civilians.

The final decision on the application will be made by the township's board of trustees on Dec. 12.
