Murder victim's friend reacts to identification of suspect

WALKER, Mich. (WZZM) -- With a home invasion and rape suspect now accused also of killing a mother who went missing, a friend of the murder victim says the new development stirs up more pain.

Shawn Jarrett was arraigned Monday on charges related to the attack on an elderly Grandville woman last week. Following Jarrett's arrest, Walker police said he's also the suspect in the death of Yolanda Reyes.

Xeomara Montenegro, a friend of Reyes, said Jarrett being named as a suspect has not brought the closure she initially expect, but rather brings hurt similar to what she felt soon after Reyes went missing.

"We were trying to be prepared. I stuck with the family and said, 'Well, let's just be prepared. Sooner or later, there's going to be a suspect.' But now that there is a face and a possible suspect, it's hard. One of the toughest things for the family and for friends and the whole community is to find out about the past about this person."

Montenegro said she hopes anyone with information about Jarrett's connection to Reyes shares that information with investigators. Jarrett used to work at the same warehouse where Reyes worked.

Reyes, a mother of four, went missing in April, and her body was found later, hidden at a construction site.
