Tactical center proposed for Whitehall-area residential property

BLUE LAKE TOWNSHIP, MICH. - The Blue Lake Township Planning Commission is being asked to approve a firearms training academy with multiple shooting ranges.

Ranger Firearm Instruction is asking the township to approve the development of 61 acres of along Hyde Park Road. The property is currently zoned residential.

If approved, the project would include a tower and classrooms where police and and the public could learn tactical skills. The site is close to property that could eventually become a housing development.

The Sparta company wants to teach classes any time of the day and teach tactical operations after dark, too.

"The 24-7 part bothers people, we have a noise ordinance in the township and there should be no noise after 10 p.m., and we are not sure that would apply to something like that," said Lyle Monette, Blue Lake Township Trustee.

The planning commission is holding a special hearing on the project at Blue Lake Community Church at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 3.

A large crowd is expected to attend.
