Teen charged in crash that killed 15-year-old

UPDATE (3 p.m. Friday)-- The Muskegon County prosecutor has issued two felony charges against an 18-year-old driver in a Whitehall crash that killed on teen and seriously injured another.

Jordyn Garza of Whitehall faces charges of reckless driving causing death and reckless driving causing serious impairment. Police say Garza was traveling at high speeds when he crashed in an alley in the 400 block between Mears Avenue and Division Street around 2:15 p.m. Thursday. The vehicle hit a tree and a utility pole, killing 15-year-old Makaila Stever-Knapp, who was a passenger in the car.

Three others were also in the car and one of those other passengers did suffer life-threatening injuries, according to Whitehall Police. The driver, who did not suffer any apparent injuries, was taken into custody at the Muskegon County Jail.

Police say alcohol and drugs are not believed to be a factor. The crash is still under investigation.

Papa's Pizza in Montague posted on their Facebook page late Thursday night that one of the people involved in the crash was an employee and another was the son of an employee.

Makaila was a member of the Class of 2017 at Montague High School, according to her Facebook page.
