STANTON, MICH. - A Wyoming, Mich. man responsible for a deadly crash in Montcalm County last year that killed an elderly couple was sentenced Friday to between two and 15 years in prison.
Joel Ibarra, 26, pleaded no contest in March to operating under the influence causing death for the May 1, 2016 crash near Schmeid Road north of Six Lakes in Belvidere Township.
Police say Raymond J. Wrona, and his wife, Mary, both 88, died from injuries suffered in the 7:15 p.m. crash.
Ibarra was driving a 2012 Audi on M-66, attempting to pass several vehicles when he collided with the Wrona’s vehicle, investigators said.
Raymond Wrona was taken to Kelsey Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Mary Wrona was pronounced dead at the scene. The couple lived in Grand Rapids.
Ibarra and a passenger, a 28-year-old woman from Comstock Park, were also treated for injuries. Criminal charges were filed in July.
Raymond and Mary Wrona, who are survived by five children and 11 grandchildren, were getting ready to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary, according to their obituary.
In addition to prison, Montcalm County Circuit Court Judge Ronald Schafer ordered Ibarra to pay more than $18,800 in restitution.
