WZZM 13's Janet Mason honored with NATAS Silver Circle award

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- On March 1, 2015, WZZM 13 President and General Manager Janet Mason, will be one of six Michigan broadcasters inducted into the prestigious Silver & Gold Circle of the Michigan chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

When Mason came to Michigan in 1997, she became one of the first Asian American television station general managers in the United States and the first female television station general manager in West Michigan.

Mason's television career began in 1975 at WOI-TV in Ames, Iowa, where she worked as a part-time reporter, photographer, editor, and vacation relief weathercaster, while in college. After graduating from Iowa State University, she worked at WSAU-TV in Wausau, Wisc. before moving to KARE-TV in Minneapolis, Minn. At KARE, Mason was a reporter and fill-in anchor to bureau chief and managing editor, before rising to news director and vice president of news.

She was the first female news director in Gannett, an international media company that owns WZZM, USA Today and many other media brands. Janet spent one year as Gannett Broadcasting's vice president/news executive before arriving in Grand Rapids as president and general manager of WZZM 13, the Gannett-owned ABC affiliate.

NATAS description of the Silver & Gold Circle: One of the highest honors given by NATAS, the Michigan Silver Circle recognizes television professionals who have performed distinguished service within the television industry for 25 years or more, a significant part of which was done within our chapter. Gold Circle inductees have served the industry for 50 years or more. Silver and Gold Circle members are honored for more than their longevity — they are honored for making an enduring contribution to the vitality of the television industry and for setting standards of achievement we can all hope to emulate. These honorees also give back to the community as mentors, educators, and volunteers.

The award ceremony is on Sunday, March 1 in Birmingham, Mich.
