Gaines Twp., Mich. (WZZM)- Emergency crews are investigating a vehicle crash into a home in Gaines Township.
It happened in the 6000 block of South Park near Kalamazoo Avenue.
Emergency crews on the scene say a 47 year old Middleville man traveling south on Kalamazoo lost control of his vehicle, went through the woods, and then slammed into the house.
Bob Faber had just returned home from work and says he was standing in his dining room talking with his wife Wanda, when the heard what sounded like an explosion in the room beneath them
"We just heard a kaboom," he said. "So I quick ran downstairs and said there's a pickup in the basement. The basement was full of smoke already. I tired to help the gentleman that was in there but it was full of smoke and I had to get out."
Faber says the pickup was still in gear and the wheels spinning. He says the driver eventually crawled out by himself.
Authorities with the Kent County Sheriff's Department say the driver was taken by ambulance to Metro Hospital with a head injury. They also say a previously undiagnosed medical condition led to the accident.
Wanda Faber says she thankful no one else was hurt.
"It is our rec room so it is where the kids hang out," she said. "It is a blessing he (her husband) usually goes downstairs and grabs something out of the fridge when he gets home and he did not do that today and it was a blessing he wasn't down there."
Crews had a difficult time getting the truck out of the house. At one point it broke loose from the chain on the tow truck and threatened to take out the upstairs floor. Eventually crews removed the top of the truck to get it out.
Deputies say based on his behavior they are checking the driver's blood alcohol level to see if alcohol was involved.
