MANLIUS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM)- Emergency crews have recovered the body of a Gobles man involved in a canoeing accident in the Kalamazoo River.

The Allegan County Sheriff's Office says the victim, 67 year old David John Barber, was canoeing with his wife Marilyn Barber when their boat capsized in the cold water. Marilyn Barber was treated and released by Fennville AMR for non life threatening injuries.

Chief Lowell Winnie of the Fennville Area Fire Department told WZZM's Peter Ross that the couple launched a canoe off of M-89 outside of Fennville. It is unclear at this time how the Barbers fell into the water. Marilyn Barber used a cell phone to call 9-1-1 for help.

Allegan County dispatchers received the call just after 1 p.m. The drowning occured close to 126th Avenue and Old Allegan Road. That's just north of the village of Fennville.
