MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM)- Voters in the North Muskegon School District will vote Tuesday, Nov. 3, on a bond extension to pay for new technology and to replace two of the district's oldest buses.
District leaders say if the Cash for Clunkers program was offered on school buses, most of their district's fleet would qualify.
The district has 6 buses. Five buses are more than 14 years old. The Superintendent for North Muskegon Schools John Weaver, says, "The bus fleet is wearing out due to age." Bus 7 leads the pack. At 24 years old, it even qualifies for an antique license plate in the state of Michigan.
The school district is asking for a $1.7 million bond extension. Some of the money would be used to purchase two new buses.
Most of the money would go towards technology, including laptops and improvements to the school's wireless system. The district also wants to improve its phone and security systems. A yes vote would extend the payoff on a bond approved 5 years ago. Weaver says "the amount levied would stay the same. All it does is push the payoff from 2028 and 29 school year to the 2033 to 34 school year."
