HOLLAND, Mich. (WZZM)- Tonight, the city of Holland is holding a general City Council meeting that will mark the end on of an era: it's the last for Mayor Al McGeehan.
McGeehan spent 32 years on the city council and 16 as the tulip city's longest sitting mayor.
"I have loved being involved here at city hall... especially the last 16 years serving as Mayor of the city," he said.
In his decades of service McGeehan oversaw major projects, renovations and reforms, but many believe is McGeehan's legacy will be rooted in his accessability, humility and caring nature.
McGeehen says he has "plans in the works" to focus his efforts on education and will continue being a community leader.
"I am leaving, I'm transitioning, I'm not retiring, I'm not stepping down or aside," said McGeehan. "And I'm not going to play shadow politician."
McGeehan said he has no plans to return to politics. When asked if he may position to run for a higher office he said he was disgusted by the partisan politics in both Lansing and Washington.
Still city leaders and residents said there's going to be a big hole in their hearts where "Mayor Al" was.
"It's not just his ability to communicate but the principals that he communicates in his speeches and in his love for people," said Councilmember Nancy De Boer. "We are very grateful to have been a part of the legacy that will be Albert H. McGeehan."
