DOUGLAS, Mich. (WZZM)- Allegan County fire officials say an abandoned home which was once a part of the old Naughton's Marina in downtown Douglas was destroyed by fire Tuesday night.
It happened around 7:00 p.m. near the intersection of Center and Water Street. Fire investigators say the structure has been abandoned for 2 to 3 years.
Renee Waddell, the Mayor of Douglas, tells WZZM 13 News the home had been bank owned for several years and was recently purchased by a man from Chicago, Illinois. Waddell says the new owner is headed to West Michigan to see what's left of his investment. Mayor Waddell says she was hopeful the home could be brought back to its original shape by its new owner and is disappointed by tonight's fire.
When asked if the fire was considered suspicious Saugatuck Township Fire Chief John Blok said, "As far as it being suspicious, well there was no gas or electric."
No one was injured in the fire and no neighboring structures were damaged.
