LEE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) - A four-year old boy is dead and his mother is in critical condition after a fire at their home in Allegan County.

It happened in the 900-block of 54th Street in Lee Township. There were three people inside the home at the time; the mother, 25-year old Christie Everett, and her two young children.

Everett and a her 2-year old daughter made it out, but the four year old boy, Joe Everett, did not. He was found, later, in a back bedroom.

It all happened just before noon Monday. When firefighters got the call, they said they could see smoke as they went out the door of the fire station, which is located a few miles away.

When firefighters arrived at the home, they found the mother outside the mobile home, badly burned from trying to rescue her son.

She was eventually airlifted to a Kalamazoo hospital where she is listed in critical condition. The 2-year old girl was not injured. The father was at work at the time of the fire.

The Lee Township Fire Chief, Nelvin DeWeerd, says nothing could be done to save the little boy. "When we got here, there was so much fire, we couldn't enter the house. Plus, the back was burned and the roof and everything was burned through."

The Michigan State Police Fire Marshal did arrive on the scene a short time later. He spent the rest of the afternoon, going over the fire scene, trying to determine what may have happened.
At this point, there is still no cause of the fire.

Chief DeWeerd did say that most of the fire appeared to be in the back bedroom, where the boy was later found.
