FRUITPORT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- Even though it might never be built, a proposed casino has won approval from Muskegon County commissioners.
The Board of Commissioners this week unanimously passed a resolution supporting plans by the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians to build a casino in Fruitport Township.
It would be built at the site of the former Great Lakes Downs racetrack.
The tribe already has a casino and resort in Manistee. Several years ago the tribe purchased the land in Fruitport.
"It gives them the opportunity to show to the federal folks that there is local support, that this is not something the communities are all in an uproar about," said Muskegon County Board of Commissioners Chairman Ken Mahoney.
Fruitport's township board also passed a resolution of support, and the Norton Shores City Council may do the same next week.
Holding up the casino project is federal approval, which if granted, would leave tribe needing the state legislature's permission.
