MUSKEGON, Mich. (Grand Haven Tribune) - Health officials reported the first death due to the H1N1 flu virus in Muskegon County Monday morning.

Doctors at Mercy Health Partner's Hackley Campus say a 43-year-old woman has died after contracting the virus. The woman had other chronic health conditions, officials said.

"While for the most part, those who have been infected with the H1N1 flu virus this season have made full recoveries, this incident reminds us that influenza can be deadly," said Ken Kraus, Health Officer for Public Health - Muskegon County.

Nationally, about 36,000 people die each year after contracting the seasonal flu, which normally begins during the winter and continues through to spring.
