LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The state Senate has passed a bill allowing motorcyclists 21 and over to hit the streets without a helmet.
Senators in the past have refused to the change the law.
Riders say they deserve a right to choose whether to wear helmets.
They argue that helmets don't prevent accidents and that every state surrounding Michigan gives riders the option to not wear the head gear.
Opponents say the public should be protected from the financial risks of going without helmets.
Under the requirements, motorcyclists have to be licensed for at least two years or have finished safety course training. The bill now goes to the House.
