East Grand Rapids - An inquiry by the Michigan High School Athletic Association has resulted in a decision to put the school's athletic department on probation.
East Grand Rapids Schools were under investigation because of alleged improper recruiting by Kevin Grady Sr., the father of Kevin Grady Jr., a former player on the EGR football team. The investigation centered on allegations that Grady Sr. helped recruit six players to the team over the last three years. In two cases, students lived in homes owned by Grady Sr.
The decision means the entire athletic department is on probation for one year, while student programs and eligibility will remain. No restrictions have been placed on tournament play. In addition, Kevin Grady Sr. will not be allowed access to facilities at East Grand Rapids, unless it is as a spectator at his child's sporting events. The MHSAA says the decision is necessary to protect the integrity of programs at East Grand Rapids.
The East Grand Rapids Public School District says it disagrees with many of the conclusions of the MHSAA.
