Grand Haven - An angry community came together in Grand Haven tonight to speak out against the formation of an all-white group.
The White Voices of America just formed, but they say anonymous businesses and people have donated money to help them with their work. However, Thursday night community members made it clear their ideas are not welcome.
The founder of White Voices came to Thursday's meeting and explained the purpose of his group, ?we're looking to promote equal privileges, policies and everything for everybody."
A few weeks ago, they put up posters calling for people of white ancestry to come to a picnic this Saturday. They were forced to take the posters down because they violated an ordinance but they say they are still having their event. Traxler says the community should not fear them but embrace them, "they have nothing to fear multi-racial families have nothing to fear don't want to promote any hatred or any fear in the community."
But even some members of their own race don't support them, "you people disgust me. You have no idea what you're talking about."
The White Voices of America say they are not a hate group but like the NAACP, designed to help what they call a growing minority group--them. and they say they only have good intentions.
Gail Harrison is with the Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance and helped organize the forum,? I am a member of the NAACP. The NAACP was founded by white people and African American and most people here--feel this group---only has one goal."
Members of White Voices of American left Thursday's meeting early, saying it became too hostile.
Meantime people opposed to the group, signed a statement saying the do not support the views of White Voices. They plan to publish it in a local newspaper.
