Cascade Township - WZZM 13 News has learned a plan to announce the expansion of MSU's Medical School in Grand Rapids could be just a few weeks away.
The President of Michigan State University as well as the board of trustees are in Grand Rapids. They're here for their annual meeting which will include discussions about the Medical School. Thursday they plan on touring a number of medical facilities including Spectrum Health, Saint Mary's, and The Van Andel Institute.
WZZM 13 News talked with MSU president Lou Anna Simon Wednesday following a reception at Meijer Gardens. She's says she is confident a decision will happen soon. "We're simply going to have a plan that works for West Michigan and works for Michigan State and I'm really excited about the way the stakeholders group has been working over the last few months and I think by the fall we will have a plan that we can all be proud of and be excited about."
The stakeholders group Simon referred to was established last fall to help facilitate expansion plans.
Right now third and fourth year medical students are studying in Grand Rapids as well as at hospitals throughout the state. The proposed plan would bring first and second year students here as well.
