Stephen Grant was sentenced to 50 years to 80 years in prison Thursday for the slaying and dismemberment of his wife, Tara Grant, last winter.
He was sentenced by Judge Diane Druzinski in Macomb County Circuit Court in Mt. Clemens. He was convicted of second-degree murder in December for strangling his 34-year-old wife.
Grant did not address the family or the judge during the sentencing, said Macomb County Court Administrator Phil Frame.
Frame, who briefed some reporters as he left the courtroom, described the sentencing as "pretty restrained."
Alicia Standerfer, the sister of Tara Grant, and other members of Tara Grant's family spoke at the courtroom proceeding.
Prosecutors wanted Grant get 50-80 years, alleging that the children witnessed their mother's slaying.
Standerfer said Wednesday that the Grants' daughter, now 7, contradicted his confession at times. For example, the girl said her mother died downstairs, not upstairs, Standerfer said. But other descriptions, such as Stephen Grant being naked when he killed his wife, matched Grant's statement.
