DETROIT - General Motors Corporation plants in Michigan, Indiana and Canada were expected to close last night due to a strike at American Axle and Manufacturing Holdings Inc. GM spokesman Tom Wickham says the pickup truck factories in Flint; Fort Wayne, Ind.; and Oshawa, Ontario, were to shut down at the end of second shift.
A plant in Pontiac was closed Thursday. All the factories make the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-sized pickups. The automaker says a total of 12,000 workers will be idled. Wickham says GM is running out of parts made by Detroit-based American Axle. About 3,600 workers at five American Axle plants in Michigan and New York went on strike early Tuesday in a contract dispute.
