LANSING, Mich. - Bars and restaurants won't be forced to go smoke-free until lawmakers decide whether to excuse casinos and other businesses from the proposed statewide ban.
The conflict over exemptions could keep any smoking ban from becoming law.
It's been two weeks since the Michigan Senate voted to prohibit smoking inside all workplaces, including bars and restaurants. But the House has yet to send the legislation to Governor Granholm.
Speaker Andy Dillon sympathizes with Detroit casinos and cigar bars who argue that NOT having smoking in their facilities would hurt business. Health advocates say they'll keep pressuring legislators to approve a statewide ban.
