The weekend storms caused downed trees and power outages, mostly in Allegan County and Ottawa County.

Several residents also had to deal with flooding. The rain is causing rivers to run over and homes to fill up with water.

In Hudsonville, the Meeuwsen family had their basement flooded over the weekend. They had to call-in professional cleaners to dry out the house.

"It got to the point as we walked around down here it would squish up around your shoes", says Darl Meeuwsen. He says the water started coming in on Sunday and the sump pump couldn't keep up. Meeuwsen went out and bought a commercial pump. "Kind of disrupts your lifestyle. We got 2 or 3 hours of sleep because we were constantly getting up to check the pump."

That pump continues to push water out of the basement, but the damage to the floors is already done. Ron Brunink, President of ServPro, says you can't just leave the water and expect it to dry out on its own. "If you ignore it, mold is going to develop and it's just going to cost more money."

ServPro will have to lift up the carpet, throw away the wet padding, and completely dry out the floors and the walls.

"It's a necessary thing to dry the structure up. At this point, we're concerned about the mold and the after-effects", says Meeuwsen.

They have lived in the home for several years and never had water in their basement. Now, they just hope insurance will pay for some of the repairs.
