Part of Surviving the Economy is protecting your identity and your credit. Thieves are always looking for ways to steal information to gain access to your money and they are becoming more bold in the process.
Paul Oknaian recently received a knock at his door from a woman who said her cell phone died and she needed to call for a ride.
Oknaian says she asked to borrow his phone to make a quick call and he agreed.
However, it turns out she wasn't calling a friend but had stolen the Sears Credit Card from his mailbox and could only activate it by using his home phone. In an effort to protect consumer's many companies are requiring home activation.
Oknaian says the woman was unbelievably bold, "What amazed me more is somebody would have the gall to come into your house, use your home phone, and activate your own credit card right in front of you and completely unaware."
Paul realized what had happened shortly after the woman left. A friend suggested he hit redial on the phone and when he did, it connected him to the Sears Activation Center. In that time, the thief managed to place several charges on the card.
