(WZZM)-Doctors say economic uncertainty is generating interest in a new type of contraceptive.

Essure is a non-invasive procedure where a doctor inserts two coils into the fallopian tubes. Over three months, scar tissue builds up and blocks the woman's eggs.

Dr. Jason Bennett works at Female Pelvic Medicine and Urogynecology Institute of Michigan, located in Grand Rapids. He's been offering the procedure for three years.

He says the procedure is done in the office, involves no anesthetics, takes about 15 minutes and was 100 percent effective in a clinical trial. However it is not reversible.

"I've had a lot of patients who are engineers who are going to Texas, going to places like Indiana trying to find work, and that uncertainty I think is a big issue in relation to thinking about children in the future," says Doctor Bennett. "When you're trying to bring a child into the world, the biggest thing you want is a stable environment for them. And not being able to have the stability there, I think is a big reason patients are thinking about contraception methods that are longer term than just birth control," he says.

Jill is an Essure patient. She says she and her husband decided it was the best option for her because it didn't involve hormones, which could give her more migraines.

"Other procedures, other methods hadn't worked for us," she says. "We were blessed with two children while using other procedures, " she laughs. "But when we found out about this, we thought this would be the best method," she explains.

Dr. Bennett believes the procedure is also less expensive than Tubal Ligation, since it is an in-office procedure, but you should check with your insurance company.
