FREMONT, Mich. (WZZM) - A long-standing Newaygo County business is destroyed following a fire early Friday morning.
Flames were spotted around 2:45 a.m. at Samuel's Restaurant, located on Main Street and Connie in downtown Fremont.
Dispatchers say fire was shooting out of the back of the restaurant by the time Fremont crews arrived on the scene. Nine total departments responded.
A WZZM 13 viewer who works at the restaurant and identified herself as Tracy says the fire started in the kitchen. She says firefighters had to peel back the roof to reach areas that were smoldering. It has since collapsed.
The restaurant was closed at the time of the fire and no one was injured.
Samuel's restaurant opened more than 50 years ago. The restaurant's owner isn't sure whether they will rebuild.
A reunion for Hesperia High School's class of 1959 was supposed to be held at Samuel's Restaurant this afternoon. It will now be held at the restaurant "1 East Main" in Fremont, at the originally scheduled time, 4:00 p.m.
