GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)- In an effort to help people survive the economy, The Rapid is helping more commuters get on-board when it comes to carpooling. It's launching a new awareness campaign to promote its expanded Rideshare program.
A commuter event kicks off at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday at the MDOT Park & Ride lot at East Beltline and I- 96.
Currently, there are more than 5,000 registered users who are part of the Rideshare program. The program was previously known as the "Car and Vanpooling program" and has been around since 2006. To participate, users have to visit Rideshare's revamped web site. There, they'll create a profile and will be matched up with others who commute at a similar time and place.
In a Rapid survey back in June, participants say the number one reason they carpool is to save money. According to Business Transportation Coordinator, Kevin Wisselink, "If you look at the average cost driving yourself back and forth to work. It's more than 50 cents a mile, upwards toward $8,000/year, according to the American Automobile Association. Now if you can share a ride everyday and cut your usage in half that can be a huge cost savings for everybody."
Others who use Rideshare say they do so because it's a good way to help the environment. The program extends beyond Kent county to also include Ottawa and Allegan counties.
Rideshare is funded by a federal grant.
