MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich. (WZZM) An arts camp in Muskegon County is about to break ground on a new theater.
When the new performance stage at the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp near Twin Lake is finished, it will look like something from Shakespearean times.
Construction will start next week on a 600-seat Elizabethan Theater. The camp has been working on the project for two years.
It will cost $300,000 to build and is largely being paid for by an anonymous donor.
The theater will look similar to the historic "Globe" and "Rose" theaters from 16th and 17th century London.
Andy Dagen is the Superintendent of buildings and grounds at Blue Lake Camp. He says it's going to be a very simple theater. "No mechanical, no lights, just natural light, no heat, electricity, or bathrooms. Just an open air theater."
Bill McFarlin is the Vice President of Development at Blue Lake. He says he is excited about the expansion. "This is a terrific way to expand our theater program and give our students that attend Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp an experience that they will not be able to replicate anywhere else."
The theater should be open for the Blue Lake Camp's summer drama programs next year.
