GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)- Most people can't afford to hire a private chef, but thanks to a new course at Grand Rapids Community College, you could become one in a matter of weeks.

The course at GRIG will teach you to become a private chef for one client or a personal chef that prepares meals for several clients. It will be offered at the Secchia Institute for Culinary Education.

It is the first public college to offer the certification. The course will be taught by one of the college's current teachers, Audrey Heckwolf, who served as private chef for the DeVos family for six years. She will be certified by the owner of the American Personal and Private Chef's Association, Candy Wallace. Wallace says more homes have two people working or they have special dietary needs. "If they have particular medical challenges. If they're diabetic, have cardiac or celiac disease, or are on a gluten-free program. We are the people who do all of the sourcing, and preparation. We pay scrupulous attention to their wants and needs."

Wallace says the course is great for experienced chef's who want out of the commercial setting or want to open their own business. The private chef program is also good for young or single people who have the ability to travel or live with the client in their home.

The certification course will meet two days a week and last for seven weeks. For more information, you can contact Grand Rapids Community College.
