PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich.(WZZM) - Michigan State Police are now releasing the name of the victim involved in fatal head-on crash this morning.
The crash happened shortly after 7am this morning in the northbound lanes of the East Beltline, just north of Five Mile Road. The East Beltline is a divided road at the place where the crash happened.
Police say a pickup truck driven by a 38-year-old man, whose identity is not being released at this time, was heading southbound in the northbound lanes of the East Beltline when it hit another pickup truck heading northbound. Troopers say the wrong-way driver is hospitalized in stable condition.
The driver of the northbound truck, 30-year old Aaron Haynes of Grand Rapids, died at the scene.
State Police do think the wrong-way driver who caused the crash may have been drinking. Investigators say the truck that was driving the wrong way may not have had its headlights on at the time of the crash. State Police initially reported the headlights were not on, but now say it will take further investigation to determine if the lights were on at the time of the actual crash.
Aaron Haynes was a teacher at Lincoln Heights Elementary in Greenville. Superintendent Peter Haines issued the following statement about Aaron, "Mr. Haynes has been a remarkably positive influence on so many young lives. He combined a passion for his craft with compassion for the children he has served. He, his students, and his family members are in the thoughts and prayers of his Greenville School family."
Michigan State Police are asking anyone who saw the truck driving the wrong way to call Trooper Joe Young at (616) 866-4411 to share that information because 911 had not received any calls reporting a wrong way driver in the area.
The northbound lanes of the East Beltline were closed this morning for several hours while the crash was investigated.
Michigan State Police initially reported that 33 year old Inocencia Ochoa of Wyoming was driving the wrong way vehicle. However, State Police now say Ochoa is the owner of the pick up truck, but was not the driver. Troopers are trying to determine the exact identity of the driver. They found a state issued identification card from Washington State for the driver but are not releasing his name.
