GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM)- Thanksgiving ushers in a holiday season in which many Americans start packing on the pounds.

According to the YMCA, the average holiday meal contains 3,000 calories and 229 grams of fat, and that doesn't include snacking. To burn off those extra calories, you would have to walk 30 miles, swim five hours or run four hours.

YMCA Health and Wellness Director Jean Van Coevering has these tips to help ward off the weight:

-- Carve out a little 'me' time
Thanksgiving morning to walk or exercise for at least 20 to 30 minutes. The workout will help you feel good the whole day and contribute to watching calorie intake.

--Drink plenty of water both while working out to maintain hydration, and prior to the big meal to safeguard against overeating.

-- Take smaller portions
Don't lose the benefit of your workout by taking in more calories than you burned off. Smaller portions also won't leave you feeling bloated.

-- Resist the temptation to go back for seconds.

-- Focus on the people rather than the food. Look forward to visiting and catching up with your aunt, sister or cousin rather than that piece of pumpkin pie.

Other tips for eating healthy over the holidays:
? Use smaller plates
? Watch portion sizes
? Include a salad
? Model healthy eating
? Eat veggies, veggies and more veggies
? Chew slowly
? Listen to your body
