ZEELAND, Mich. (WZZM)- For many schools like Innocademy in Zeeland, addressing what's happening in Haiti isn't an easy subject.
But it didn't take long for many ---like 6th grader Aviva Snyder ---to step up and want to make a difference. Snyder says when she first heard what happened she felt sad, "I thought 'Oh, No!' because they're still getting through hurricane and building up from there is going to be hard from there because they are poor."
Synder is the granddaughter of Phil and Amber Snyder, co-founders of GLOW Ministries International. Over the years, she has watched them work to improve conditions in Haiti. She says, "We have a lot of friends down there that are pastors and there's a guy down there he helped us build a school and church down there and moves from church to church to praise the Lord."
Synder says she's proud of her family's dedication and that's why she's committed to the "Hearts for Haiti" project. She says, "It's going to be great for all the little kids to help out."
This week, Synder and her classmates plan to make a couple hundred valentines. The idea is to sell them locally and send the profits to Haiti. Teachers say students are proud of this stewardship project. "Our basic philosophy is how can we as individuals impact the world? Like everyone else they wanted to help," explains teacher Leisa Lobbezoo.
And they're counting on West Michigan to help in their effort.
You can buy "Hearts for Haiti" cards in bundles of 4 for $5 with all profits going to Haiti through GLOW ministries. The project is looking for businesses that are willing to offer counter space to sell the cards. If you're willing to help, you can call Leisa at (616) 446-1486.
