WASHINGTON, D.C. (WZZM) - A Battle Creek man fired from Walmart for using medical marijuana is gaining some national support.

The national Marijuana Policy Project contacted Joseph Casias after learning about his story on WZZM 13.  Casias is 29 years old and survived sinus cancer. He also suffers from an inoperable brain tumor. He has legal permission through the State of Michigan to use medical marijuana to help him cope with pain.

Casias talked to WZZM 13 last week and he showed us numerous awards he received from Walmart including 'Associate of the Year.' Walmart told WZZM 13 it does not recognize Michigan's Medical Marijuana Law and fired Casias following a routine drug test.

Today the Marijuana Policy Project issued a statement encouraging people to boycott Walmart. "It's despicable that Wal-Mart would fire such a hardworking and seriously ill employee simply for treating his symptoms with a medicine that he is authorized to use under state law," said Karen O'Keefe, director of state policies for the Marijuana Policy Project and lead drafter of Michigan's medical marijuana law.

With more than 124,000 members and supporters nationwide, the Marijuana Policy Project says it is is the largest marijuana policy reform organization in the United States.

Similar groups calling for the boycott of Walmart have formed on Facebook.
