Grand Rapids - Twelve hundred Grand Valley State University's closest friends were present for a major announcement at DeVos Place Tuesday evening.
Donors are celebrating and funding a $50-million campaign called "shaping our future" "We're going to focus in on endowments with scholarships but we're also looking at the Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies and the Johnson Center," said GVSU President, Thomas Haas.
$29- million is already donated with 18 donors giving more than $1- million towards the investment. "They are seeing Grand Valley delivering on the promises for West Michigan for the rest of the State," said Haas.
96% students are Michigan residents, 88% of graduates stay in Michigan.
In order to service and attract future students, GVSU also unveiled renderings of the the "Learning and Information Commons" which will replace the existing library on the Allendale campus.
"This is trying to meet the needs of today's students and tomorrow's students, and so it's a very unique and very different thought process they are going through and a very different design," said Campaign Co-Chair Dan DeVos.
GVSU says they are grateful to the donors who recognize the need for education especially at a time when industry is changing in Michigan.
"Higher education plays a very important strategic role in new economy and business and research and in academic support," said Jim Brooks, also a Co-Chair and GVSU Trustee.
And with more than half the funds GVSU is more than half way towards meeting its new goal as a premier institution of higher learning.
