Lansing -- Gov. Jennifer Granholm wants alternative energy to be a larger part of the Michigan's economy.
Today in Lansing, she signed a law designed to bring industries, universities, and government together to develop new energy jobs.
The "Centers of Energy Excellence" would put state money and other resources into businesses and educational institutions focused on alternative energy.
The governor says the next step in the process is in lawmakers' hands.
"We don't have a renewable portfolio standard yet -- a commitment that we get a certain percentage of our energy from renewable sources," says Gov. Granholm. "That's a piece that the legislature is going to come back and deal with, and I know they feel strongly about using alternative energy to create jobs."
The energy centers legislation is part of the same economic package that includes incentives for manufacturing and film production.
