(WZZM) - Just two years ago, 14 1/2 million Americans worked at home at least once a month. In just two more years, that number is expected to rise to 100 million.
What was once considered too good to be true, is becoming more and more feasable. In fact, there are so many opportunities out there right now that Good Morning America's Workplace Contributor Tory Johnson has written a book on the subject, titled Will Work From Home - Earn the Cash Without the Commute.
One option is virtual customer service. That's when you answer calls for a business from your home. Alpine Access is just one company that does this. It hires out on behalf of Home Depot, Jet Blue Airlines and many more well known companies. "Some of my favorites are virtual customer service," says Johnson.A job in this field usually requires a commitment of at least 20 hours per week and pays between $8 and $15 an hour.
Johnson says there is a huge opportunity right now in Direct Sales. While you may think of Avon or Mary Kay, there are hundreds of different categories that you can line up with your passion.
If you like to give homemade gifts at the holidays, why stop there? You can get another paycheck by working in home crafting services. "One of my favorite sites right now is Etsy.com which is an opportunity to sell anything you make by hand; beaded jewelry, a pillow, clothing," says Johnson. Etsy did $7-million worth of business last month alone.
And if you're good at helping people with their homework, now is the time to sign up to be an online tutor. One of the many online companies, Tutor.com is hiring 900 new online tutors for the fast-approaching school year. It pays between $10 and $15 an hour and you don't need a teaching certificate, but you do need a college degree or at least have to be enrolled in college right now.
"The good news is, there are lots of different categories depending how much time you have to spend and what your specific skills and interests are," says Johnson.
No matter what your choice, Johnson says now is the time to land one of these work at home opportunities because many companies are ramping up for the the holiday season.
