GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) - The Michigan Department of Natural Resources reports that their deer testing has not found any signs yet of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in the wild population.
One captive deer on an Algoma Township farm tested positive for the disease, prompting the DNR to implement strict rules for this year's deer hunt.
Deer baiting is not allowed anywhere in the lower peninsula, and all deer taken in the northern Kent County townships must be checked at a DNR testing site.
According to the DNR, they have checked 1,095 wild deer statewide this season (through 10/6). 964 tests were negative and 131 were still pending.
In Kent County, there have been 394 deer tested with 305 negative results and 89 pending.
Deer testing will continue through the deer hunting season.
