GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - One person is in custody after Grand Rapids Police say the driver crashed into a restaurant early Saturday morning.
Police say it happened just after 4 a.m. Saturday, June 3, at the Black Heron Kitchen and Bar on Bridge Street. The incident didn't seem to cause structural damage, although some of its windows were shattered by the crash.
"The irony is that before we opened this place, these were all cinder block walls, so we put these windows in brand new, so it's kind of disheartening to see it turn out like this," Black Heron Kitchen and Bar owner Seth Porter said.
The driver of the car was taken to the hospital to treat some minor injuries. There was at least one passenger in the car who was not injured.
Porter was woken up in the middle of the night to messages that someone had driven through the restaurant.
"Woke up and got some cryptic messages from my manager saying apparently someone drove through the Black Heron," Porter said. "I obviously got right out of bed, threw some clothes on, walked down here and this is what I found."
Porter is not sure what his next step will be -- he tells us he is still trying to process what happened.
"I love this neighborhood I love this community that's why I put this restaurant here, it's just been great, the neighborhood is fantastic we can't let this sour our impression of this neighborhood," Porter said.
Police do believe that speed and alcohol are believed are factors in the crash.
The incident is still under investigation.
